Toyota Fortuner

No upgrade on the Toyota Fortuner is covered by the equipment it adds. The closest is 4x2 → Legender 4x2 on the Diesel automatic: ₹5,36,000 buys ₹30,000 of equipment — 5% of the price rise.

Toyota's body-on-frame seven-seat SUV: a 2.7 petrol automatic, and a 2.8 diesel as a manual or automatic, in two- or four-wheel drive, with the 48V neoDrive mild hybrid on the 4x4 automatic and the restyled Legender above them.

Which variant to buy

Where the money buys the most equipment, and where it buys the least

No variant on the Toyota Fortuner is covered outright by the equipment it adds — the best of them reaches 5%. Here is that variant and the weakest one, both computed from the same feature valuations.

This is not a recommendation of a trim — it is the variant whose price rise our tracked equipment best explains, and the one it explains worst. A feature you will never use is worth nothing to you, whatever we value it at. Every upgrade, in order.

Toyota Fortuner: questions buyers ask

Which Toyota Fortuner variant is the best value?

4x2 2.8 Diesel AT to Legender 4x2 2.8 Diesel AT costs ₹5,36,000, and the equipment it adds is worth ₹30,000 — 5% of the price rise. That is the variant upgrade where equipment explains the most of what you pay. No variant on this car is covered outright by the equipment it adds, so this is the closest it gets. The figure is computed from the feature difference, not chosen.

Which Toyota Fortuner variant gives back the least?

4x4 2.8 Diesel MT to Legender 4x4 2.8 Diesel MT costs ₹5,79,000, and the equipment it adds is worth ₹8,750 — 1% of the price rise. The rest of that money goes on things we do not itemise — materials, fit and finish, and the manufacturer's own margin.

How many variants does the Toyota Fortuner have?

7, across 5 powertrains, from ₹35,11,000 to ₹45,53,000 ex-showroom. Seven versions: the 4x2 petrol automatic, the 2.8 diesel as 4x2 manual, 4x2 automatic and 4x4 manual, the neoDrive 4x4 automatic, and the Legender as a 4x2 automatic and 4x4 manual. Left out: the Legender neoDrive 4x4 automatic and the GR-S, which no current Toyota document covers; the Leader Edition, an appearance edition; and the petrol manual, which Toyota lists but does not price. Toyota publishes no certified efficiency figure for this car, so none is shown.

What is the EMI on the Toyota Fortuner?

About ₹67,462 a month for the cheapest variant, 4x2 2.7 Petrol AT: ₹40,86,180 on the road in Delhi, 20% down, and a loan of ₹32,68,944 at 8.75% a year for 5 years. A different rate, tenure or down payment changes it — the EMI calculator works it out for your own figures.

What are the Toyota Fortuner's dimensions, boot space and ground clearance?

It is 4,795 mm long, 1,855 mm wide and 1,835 mm tall, on a 2,745 mm wheelbase. We hold no ground clearance figure from Toyota's own documents. The fuel tank holds 80 litres. These are Toyota's own figures.

When was the Toyota Fortuner launched?

The Toyota Fortuner on sale now, the second generation, was launched in India in Nov 2016. It was last facelifted in Jan 2021: Revised front and rear styling, more powerful 2.8 diesel and added equipment; the Legender version was introduced alongside.

Is a new Toyota Fortuner or a facelift coming?

Not confirmed by Toyota. News reports as of 1 Nov 2026 point to a new generation in 2027. A global reveal of the next-generation Fortuner on 1 December 2026 has been reported, attributed to Toyota South Africa; reports expect India in 2027. Toyota India has not announced a date.

What colours does the Toyota Fortuner come in?

Toyota lists 6 colours: Platinum White Pearl, Super White, Attitude Black, Avant-Garde Bronze, Sparkling Black Crystal Shine, Platinum White Pearl with Black Roof. Not every colour is offered on every variant.

What is the Toyota Fortuner's safety rating?

The current Toyota Fortuner has not been crash-tested by Bharat NCAP or Global NCAP yet.

What is the on-road price of the Toyota Fortuner?

The cheapest variant, 4x2 2.7 Petrol AT, comes to about ₹40,86,180 on road in Delhi — ₹35,11,000 ex-showroom plus road tax, insurance, registration and TCS where it applies. Road tax is set by the state, so the total moves by a lakh or more between them.

How we checked these figures

Data notes — where these figures come from

LADDERS: Toyota sells the Fortuner as one trim per powertrain, so most versions sit alone. The two comparisons that exist are the Legender against the Fortuner it is built on - 4x2 diesel automatic, and 4x4 diesel manual. Drivetrain is `4wd` on the three 4x4s. LEFT OUT, and why: - Legender neoDrive 4x4 AT (Rs 48,29,000). Toyota's Legender spec sheet predates neoDrive and its live page never mentions it, so there is no Toyota word on its equipment - and the Fortuner brochure shows neoDrive changes the kit (it drops ventilated seats, below). Toyota's own brochure marks the 360 camera, wireless charger, dashcam and TPMS '##' - dealer-fitted accessories, 'not part of standard fitment' - so none of them is credited. - GR-S 4x4 AT (Rs 50,46,000). Its only Toyota document is a June 2023 highlights brochure that names no seat adjustment, ventilation, armrest or glovebox. Built from it, the GR-S would 'drop' half the Fortuner's kit on the page, and those would be gaps in the document, not in the car. - Leader Edition (from Rs 34,79,000): a styling edition, the dual-tone/Knight rule. - Petrol manual: Toyota's matrix heads the column 'Petrol [MT / AT]' and specifies a 5MT, but no price list carries one. neoDRIVE drops ventilated seats. Toyota's own matrix merges 'Ventilated Front Seats with perforation' across the Petrol and Diesel columns and prints '-' under Diesel-neoDrive, and the dearer neoDrive is credited without them. It is stored as diesel (a 48V mild hybrid, the Hyryder Neodrive's disposition), with Toyota's 500 Nm automatic torque. It gains MTS (Mud/Sand/Rock/Dirt/Deep Snow) beside the Eco/Normal/Sport modes and earns the drive-and-terrain-modes entry; the others hold drive modes only (the petrol has Eco/Power). LEGENDER over the Fortuner, per Toyota: 18-inch machine-cut alloys on the 4x2 too, ambient illumination on the instrument garnish, front door trims and footwells, and a wireless charger. The charger and the kick-sensor tailgate are footnoted '***' in Toyota's sheet and the footnote is never defined; the Legender launched as an automatic and its page lists the charger as standard, so it is credited on the 4x2 automatic and NOT on the 4x4 manual, which Toyota added later. Under-credit if the footnote means something else. JBL (11 speakers with subwoofer and amplifier) is '4WD only' in both documents; the 4x2s have six speakers. Downhill assist control is 4WD only. 17-inch alloys on the 4x2 Fortuners, 18-inch on every 4x4. Paddle shifters are credited on the diesel automatics only: the shared 6AT cell mentions them, but Toyota's page and brochure both footnote 'Power Steering with VFC & Paddleshifts - only available on diesel variants'. NOT CREDITED: the 360-degree camera and wireless charger on the neoDrive Fortuner (dealer accessories, above); the reversing camera, as 'Back Monitor' with no stated guidelines (the Bolero Neo call); automatic headlamps, because the Fortuner sheet says 'Dusk Sensing' and the Legender's does not, and crediting one would print a drop that is a gap in a document; the instrument 'Large TFT MID', which is unsized; and roof rails, rain-sensing wipers, a rear defogger/wiper, a rear centre armrest, a leather steering wheel and a height-adjustable seat, none of which either document lists. 'Power Adjust Driver and Front Passenger Seats' does not say how many ways, so the driver's seat sits at the 4-way rung and the passenger's earns the powered co-driver entry. 'Leather Seats' are genuine-and-synthetic by Toyota's footnote and earn the leatherette entry.
