How we put a price on a car feature

Every verdict on this site comes from one calculation: what the features you gain between two variants are worth, against what the variant costs extra. That only means anything if you can see the numbers and argue with them. So here they all are — all 76 of them, what each is valued at, and why.

First, what the number is not

It is not what the feature costs the manufacturer

Nobody outside a carmaker knows what a sunroof costs to fit on the line, and it would not help you if we did. What matters when you are standing in a showroom is different: what is this worth to me?

So each figure is our estimate of what a feature is worth to a buyer who wants it — benchmarked, wherever possible, against what it would cost to get that feature another way.

The two anchors

Can you add it later, or not?

This is the question that decides how a feature is valued, and it is the most useful thing to know before paying for a trim.

Retrofit · 31 features

You could add it afterwards

Alloy wheels, a touchscreen, seat covers, a reversing camera. The aftermarket price anchors the value, because that is your alternative. If a variant upgrade charges far more than the fitted aftermarket cost, the lower trim plus a visit to an accessories shop is usually the better buy — and our verdict will say so.

Factory-only · 45 features

It has to come from the factory

Side and curtain airbags, stability control, ADAS, a sunroof aperture, ventilated seats, LED headlamp assemblies. These are wired into the body or the ECUs and cannot be added later at any sensible price or safety standard. If you want one of these, the trim that has it is the only way to get it, and that is reflected in the value.

How firm is each number?

Every valuation below carries one of three labels, and the count is what it is — we would rather show you which numbers are soft than present all 76 as equally solid.

high · 27
Priced against something you can go and buy today.
medium · 30
A reference point exists, but not for the identical item.
low · 19
No purchasable equivalent — an estimate of worth, not of cost.

Each valuation also carries the date it last changed, taken from this repository's own history rather than asserted — a freshness claim nothing backs is worse than no claim at all.

Adjustment

The same feature is worth less on a cheaper car

A sunroof on a ₹6 lakh hatchback is not worth what it is on a ₹20 lakh SUV — the buyer is more price-sensitive and the feature is a larger share of the car. Every value below is quoted for a mid-size SUV and scaled by segment:

Entry hatchback ×0.7Premium hatchback ×0.85Compact sedan ×0.85Mid-size sedan ×1Sub-compact SUV ×0.92MPV ×0.95Mid-size SUV ×1Executive / premium ×1.25Lifestyle off-roader ×0.95
The verdict

What the share of the price gap has to reach

We add up the features you gain, subtract anything the higher trim drops, and express it as a share of the price gap. That share is what the verdict is based on.

We only price the equipment that differs between two variants. The rest of the price gap pays for things we deliberately do not itemise — upholstery and trim materials, fit and finish, badging, and the manufacturer's own margin. So a share below 100% is normal, and for a long time our feature list was thin enough that no variant could reach it.

That changed in September 2026, when we added the 27 items that separate a base trim from the one above it — remote locking, a speaker system, wheel covers, a rear defogger, armrests, a day/night mirror, automatic headlamps — along with the extras at the top of a range. The list now covers enough of a real variant upgrade that we can ask the honest question: is the equipment worth what the variant costs extra?

Worth it100% or more
The equipment alone covers the price rise. If you want any of what it adds, buy it.
Fair upgrade60% to 100%
Reasonable if you specifically want what it adds. Not a bargain.
PriceyUnder 60%
You are mostly paying for something other than equipment. Look hard at the list.

These bands are a property of how completely our feature list captures real trim equipment, so they are re-derived from the data whenever that list grows — never moved to make the numbers look better. They were 75% and 45% against a 49-feature list; filling the gap at the bottom of a range raised the typical upgrade from about 60% to 85%, which left most upgrades sharing one verdict. At 100% and 60% the upgrades spread evenly again, and the thresholds say something plainer than the old ones did.

Safety & driver assistance

Factory-onlylow confidenceCamera and radar hardware tied into the braking and steering ECUs. No aftermarket equivalent exists, and it is the single largest reason buyers move up a trim.Last reviewed 10 Sept 2026
Factory-onlylow confidenceSide and curtain airbags are built into the seats and roof lining. Cannot be added later at any price.Last reviewed 10 Sept 2026
Factory-onlymedium confidenceAftermarket 360 kits are common and cheap, but the factory system is calibrated to the car and integrates with the parking sensors; valued between the two.Last reviewed 10 Sept 2026
Factory-onlylow confidenceStability control lives in the ABS module and needs factory calibration for the specific car.Last reviewed 10 Sept 2026
Factory-onlylow confidenceRear disc conversion kits exist but are rarely road-legal in India without homologation.Last reviewed 10 Sept 2026
Factory-onlylow confidenceEither radar units in the rear bumper or mirror-mounted cameras tied into the cluster and the indicator stalks.Last reviewed 16 Sept 2026
Retrofitmedium confidenceA good aftermarket dashcam fitted costs about this, and unlike most of this list it is genuinely easy to add later.Last reviewed 16 Sept 2026
Retrofithigh confidenceA camera and display fitted afterwards costs a little less than this.Last reviewed 10 Sept 2026
Factory-onlymedium confidenceThe heated element is laminated into the glass.Last reviewed 10 Sept 2026
Retrofitmedium confidenceAftermarket TPMS kits are common; the factory system reads per-wheel pressure on the cluster.Last reviewed 10 Sept 2026
Retrofithigh confidenceSensor sets are widely available and fitting is straightforward.Last reviewed 10 Sept 2026
Factory-onlymedium confidenceNeeds a light sensor wired into the body control module; retrofit kits are unreliable and rarely fitted.Last reviewed 16 Sept 2026
Factory-onlymedium confidenceThe sensor sits on the windscreen behind the mirror and is tied to the wiper module, so it comes with the glass and the loom.Last reviewed 16 Sept 2026
Factory-onlylow confidenceBrake and engine control logic in the stability-control module. No aftermarket equivalent.Last reviewed 16 Sept 2026
Factory-onlymedium confidenceThe heated element is laminated into the glass. Priced below the combined defogger-and-wiper item, which adds a motor and washer circuit.Last reviewed 16 Sept 2026
Retrofitmedium confidenceAftermarket electrochromic mirrors are available and fit in place of the standard one.Last reviewed 16 Sept 2026
Retrofithigh confidenceA clip-on or swapped mirror costs very little, which is why this is the smallest figure in the registry.Last reviewed 16 Sept 2026

Comfort & convenience

Factory-onlylow confidenceCutting a roof aperture afterwards compromises structural rigidity. The most-requested feature in this segment, which is why it carries the highest comfort value here.Last reviewed 10 Sept 2026
Factory-onlymedium confidenceSame structural argument as the panoramic unit, at a smaller aperture.Last reviewed 10 Sept 2026
Factory-onlymedium confidenceRequires perforated upholstery and fans built into the seat base.Last reviewed 10 Sept 2026
Factory-onlymedium confidenceMotorised seat frame; not a swappable part.Last reviewed 10 Sept 2026
Factory-onlylow confidenceA second motorised seat frame. Priced just below the driver's 8-way seat, which usually carries more axes of movement.Last reviewed 16 Sept 2026
Factory-onlylow confidencePerforated upholstery and fans built into the rear seat base. Priced below the front pair, which matter more to the person who drives the car every day.Last reviewed 16 Sept 2026
Factory-onlylow confidenceReplaces the mechanical handbrake with actuators on the rear calipers.Last reviewed 10 Sept 2026
Factory-onlymedium confidenceA different HVAC head unit and sensor set, not a control-panel swap. Valued for automatic climate control of any kind: our source data distinguishes single-zone from dual-zone inconsistently, so a dual-zone system earns no extra credit here.Last reviewed 10 Sept 2026
Factory-onlymedium confidenceImmobiliser and body-control-module change; aftermarket kits exist but void warranty and are a theft risk.Last reviewed 10 Sept 2026
Retrofithigh confidenceGood seat covers cost about this and can be fitted to any trim.Last reviewed 10 Sept 2026
Factory-onlymedium confidenceA motorised frame with fewer axes. Priced at about half the 8-way seat, which also powers height and cushion tilt.Last reviewed 16 Sept 2026
Factory-onlymedium confidenceNeeds drive-by-wire throttle integration and steering controls.Last reviewed 10 Sept 2026
Factory-onlylow confidencePosition memory needs the motorised frame already present, so it is priced as an increment on top of it.Last reviewed 10 Sept 2026

Retrofithigh confidenceAftermarket strips are cheap; the factory system is tidier and priced modestly above them.Last reviewed 10 Sept 2026
Factory-onlymedium confidenceA body-control-module and immobiliser change. Priced below the smart key, which adds passive entry — walking up and opening the car without touching the key is the part buyers actually notice.Last reviewed 16 Sept 2026
Retrofitmedium confidencePortable purifiers cost less than this; the figure carries a premium for the integrated unit and its display.Last reviewed 16 Sept 2026

Factory-onlymedium confidenceA different rear seat back, not a fitted accessory. Priced level with the front armrest.Last reviewed 16 Sept 2026
Retrofithigh confidenceA wrap or a swapped wheel costs about this fitted.Last reviewed 16 Sept 2026
Factory-onlymedium confidenceA duct moulded into the dashboard. Small, but it is a real trim divider on several cars.Last reviewed 16 Sept 2026

Infotainment & connectivity

Retrofithigh confidenceLittle credible aftermarket equivalent at this size, so priced closer to what the trim upgrade charges than to a retrofit.Last reviewed 10 Sept 2026
Retrofithigh confidencePriced as the upgrade from an 8-inch unit at a larger format and higher resolution. A factory head unit also keeps the steering controls and the reversing camera working, which an aftermarket fit often breaks.Last reviewed 17 Sept 2026
Retrofithigh confidenceSits between the 8-inch and 10-inch units; anchored to what an equivalent aftermarket head unit costs fitted, plus a premium for factory integration.Last reviewed 10 Sept 2026
Retrofithigh confidenceA good aftermarket speaker and amplifier upgrade lands near this figure fitted.Last reviewed 10 Sept 2026
Retrofithigh confidenceAnchored to the fitted price of an equivalent aftermarket unit, with a premium for factory integration and warranty.Last reviewed 10 Sept 2026
Factory-onlylow confidenceThe instrument cluster is bound to the car's CAN bus and odometer.Last reviewed 10 Sept 2026
Factory-onlylow confidenceEither a combiner and projector built into the dashboard or a treated windscreen. Stick-on aftermarket units are not the same thing.Last reviewed 16 Sept 2026
Retrofithigh confidenceA comparable aftermarket head unit fitted costs roughly this much, so the factory unit is worth about the same to a buyer who would otherwise fit one.Last reviewed 10 Sept 2026
Factory-onlylow confidenceNeeds an embedded SIM and a telematics unit wired to the car's systems. Valued for the hardware only — most makers charge a subscription once the free period ends.Last reviewed 16 Sept 2026
Factory-onlylow confidenceThe cluster is bound to the car's CAN bus and odometer. Priced at half the full-width unit, which replaces the dials entirely.Last reviewed 16 Sept 2026
Retrofithigh confidenceAftermarket pads are cheap; the value here is the integrated cradle and cooling.Last reviewed 10 Sept 2026
Retrofithigh confidenceA basic head unit and a pair of speakers fitted costs about this. Set only where the trim has no touchscreen, so it is never counted alongside one. Priced at the low end because what qualifies ranges from a two-speaker dock to a four-speaker system.Last reviewed 16 Sept 2026
Factory-onlylow confidencePart of the dashboard and the climate module.Last reviewed 10 Sept 2026

Exterior & wheels

Retrofithigh confidencePriced as the upgrade from a 17-inch wheel. Worth knowing that bigger factory wheels also mean more expensive tyres for the life of the car.Last reviewed 17 Sept 2026
Retrofithigh confidencePriced as the upgrade from a 16-inch wheel: a larger diameter on a lower-profile tyre, bought as a set of four with tyres.Last reviewed 17 Sept 2026
Retrofithigh confidenceA set of comparable alloys costs about this fitted, which is why buying a lower trim and changing wheels is often the better move.Last reviewed 10 Sept 2026
Factory-onlymedium confidenceHeadlamp assemblies are homologated as a unit; retrofit LED bulbs in halogen housings are illegal and dangerous.Last reviewed 17 Sept 2026
Retrofithigh confidenceA set of comparable 15-inch alloys costs about this fitted, which is why buying a lower trim and changing wheels is often the better move.Last reviewed 10 Sept 2026
Retrofithigh confidenceA set of comparable 14-inch alloys costs about this fitted — the smallest size in common use, and the cheapest wheel upgrade to make yourself.Last reviewed 10 Sept 2026
Factory-onlymedium confidencePriced as the upgrade beyond a reflector LED unit: a projector throws a sharper, better-controlled beam. Like any headlamp assembly it is homologated as a unit, so it cannot be fitted afterwards.Last reviewed 17 Sept 2026
Factory-onlymedium confidenceA full tail-lamp assembly and rear panel change.Last reviewed 17 Sept 2026
Retrofithigh confidenceFog lamp kits are cheap and simple to fit.Last reviewed 17 Sept 2026
Retrofithigh confidenceFog lamp kits are cheap and simple to fit, and this sits below the LED item for the same reason.Last reviewed 16 Sept 2026
Roof Rails
₹5,000
Retrofithigh confidenceBolt-on rails are widely sold and fitted for around this.Last reviewed 16 Sept 2026
Retrofithigh confidenceA set of covers costs about this. It is the cheapest level of wheel we price — a manufacturer's 'styled' or 'hyperstyle' steel wheel sits here too — and is never set alongside alloys.Last reviewed 16 Sept 2026

Powertrain & drive modes

Factory-onlylow confidenceECU mapping, not a fitted part.Last reviewed 10 Sept 2026
Factory-onlymedium confidenceNeeds the transmission to support manual mode.Last reviewed 10 Sept 2026
Factory-onlylow confidenceECU mapping, not a fitted part. Priced well below the combined drive-and-traction system, which also changes how power is sent to the wheels on loose surfaces.Last reviewed 16 Sept 2026
Where this is weakest

What we would want you to know before trusting it

  • These are judgement calls, not survey data. They are informed estimates benchmarked against aftermarket pricing where an aftermarket exists. They are not the output of a study of what buyers pay.
  • The list is incomplete. 76 features do not capture everything that separates two trims, and coverage is thinnest at the bottom of a range, where trims differ on many small items. A base-to-second-trim upgrade will usually score worse than it deserves.
  • A feature you do not want is worth nothing to you. We value a sunroof highly because most buyers in this segment want one. If you never open it, ignore that line and read the rest.
  • Prices move. Every model page carries the date we last checked its prices against the manufacturer, and which powertrains its variant list covers.

If a number here looks wrong to you, it might be. Tell us which one and why — hello@carmaths.in. Arguments that change our mind change the table.
