By Rupesh Kumar · Published · Figures checked

The short answer

43 of the 77 combustion cars we track sell a variant under ₹10 lakh ex-showroom. The most any prints is 118 bhp, shared by the Tata Nexon, Kia Syros, Tata Punch, Hyundai Venue, Kia Sonet and Tata Curvv; the cheapest way to it is the Tata Nexon Smart 1.2 Turbo at ₹7,39,990. Per lakh of price the Maruti S-Presso leads, at 19.4 bhp, because it is the cheapest car here.

What this ranks, and what it does not

43 of the 77 combustion cars we track sell at least one variant under ₹10 lakh ex-showroom — 367 of 1005 variants. For each car we take the most power any of those variants makes, as the manufacturer prints it, and the cheapest variant that makes it. The most anything under the line prints is 118 bhp, and 6 cars share it: the Tata Nexon, the Kia Syros, the Tata Punch, the Hyundai Venue, the Kia Sonet and the Tata Curvv, every one a turbo petrol. The cheapest way to it is the Tata Nexon Smart at ₹7,39,990.

These are printed figures and nothing more. Power and torque say what an engine makes; how quickly a car gets moving also depends on its weight, gearing and gearbox, none of which is in this table, so we make no claim about acceleration. Power is in bhp throughout, converted from whatever unit the manufacturer printed. 24 of the 43 cars also sell an automatic at their top output under ₹10 lakh; each row says which, and at what price.

5 of these prices have risen since we began recording them, so an older report will quote less: the Kia Sonet HTK(O) was ₹9,24,900 and has been ₹9,33,900 since 6 October, the Maruti Brezza LXi was ₹7,39,900 and has been ₹7,49,900 since 28 September, the Maruti Fronx Delta+ was ₹8,91,900 and has been ₹8,96,900 since 26 September, the Hyundai Venue HX2 was ₹8,90,600 and has been ₹8,93,600 since 25 September and the Hyundai i20 Sportz was ₹8,81,200 and has been ₹8,86,200 since 24 September.

“=” marks a tie: cars making the same power share a rank and are listed cheapest first, which is an order, not a verdict. Each figure is the one that car’s own brochure prints, converted to bhp (PS × 0.986, kW × 1.341). Where we read the same figure off two cars’ documents for one engine — a rebadge, say — they carry it identically, so those ties are real rather than rounding. A maker can also print one engine two ways: Maruti's Wagon R brochure gives its 1.2 K12N 90 bhp and 114 Nm, its Fronx brochure 88 bhp and 113 Nm, and each car keeps its own document's figure. Prices are ex-showroom Delhi.

The finding

Under ₹10 lakh, power usually comes with the base variant

On 30 of these 43 cars, the most powerful variant under ₹10 lakh is also the car’s cheapest variant. On those cars no dearer variant within the budget makes more power, so what the extra money buys inside ₹10 lakh is equipment rather than output.

The other 13 — the Tata Punch, the Hyundai Venue, the Kia Sonet, the Mahindra XUV 3XO, the Citroën C3X, the Citroën Basalt X, the Renault Triber, the Renault Kiger, the Nissan Magnite, the Maruti Fronx, the Maruti Wagon R, the Tata Altroz and the Hyundai i20 — sell a stronger engine, gearbox or tune higher up the range but still under ₹10 lakh, so the table above prices them at that variant rather than at their cheapest.

26 of the 43 cars fall into 10 groups that print identical power and torque, which is why the table is crowded with ties.

The cheapest way to each level of power

Take every variant under ₹10 lakh, cheapest first, and keep one only when it makes more power than everything cheaper. What is left is the lowest price at which each output is on sale — 5 points, from 68 bhp to 118 bhp. Because this walks every variant, a car can appear here on a cheaper engine than the one the table above lists for it. The biggest single jump is to the Tata Nexon: 28 bhp more for ₹1,41,590 more than the Maruti Wagon R below it.

Power per lakh of price

The same 43 variants, ranked by bhp for every ₹1 lakh of ex-showroom price. Read it with care: a ratio like this rewards a low price as much as a big engine, and the leader, the Maruti S-Presso at 19.4 bhp per lakh, is simply the cheapest car in the table. It is the answer to “most power per rupee”, not to “most power”. Each car is priced at its most powerful variant under ₹10 lakh, so where that is not the cheapest, the cheaper variant can return more power per rupee: the Tata Punch Smart makes 15.1 bhp per lakh against 13.9, the Mahindra XUV 3XO MX1 makes 14.1 bhp per lakh against 12.3, the Citroën C3X Live makes 16.2 bhp per lakh against 14.2, the Nissan Magnite Visia makes 12.5 bhp per lakh against 11.2, the Maruti Fronx Sigma makes 12.8 bhp per lakh against 11.0, the Tata Altroz Smart makes 14.5 bhp per lakh against 10.7 and the Hyundai i20 Era makes 13.7 bhp per lakh against 9.8.

Each row is the same variant as the power table — the cheapest one carrying the car’s top output under ₹10 lakh — so the two tables describe one set of cars. Ratios are rounded to one decimal place, and cars that round to the same figure share a rank.

Torque ranks differently

The most torque any variant under ₹10 lakh prints is 300 Nm, from the Mahindra XUV 3XO MX2 (1.5 Turbo Diesel manual) at ₹9,36,000 — a car that makes 115 bhp, short of the 118 bhp at the top of the power table. 4 of the 43 cars reach their top output under ₹10 lakh on a diesel, and those rows print 200–300 Nm against 91–190 Nm for the petrol rows — every diesel here out-torques every petrol. Power and torque answer different questions, so the two columns are worth reading together rather than one alone.

What this leaves out

34 of the 77 combustion cars we track have no variant under ₹10 lakh ex-showroom and are not in these tables. Electric cars are left out altogether — 21 of them, 3 with a variant under ₹10 lakh — because a motor's rated power and an engine's are not measured the same way and an EV stores no engine size, so they would not rank like for like. The Tata Tigor is left out as well, because it has been replaced by the Tata Aeris, which is ranked here instead. Prices are ex-showroom Delhi; road tax and registration add a different amount in every state, and ₹10 lakh is also the TCS line, so the real figure is higher — see the state-by-state charges.

We do not quote fuel efficiency here. 20 of the 43 variants in the power table have no certified figure on file, and lending one engine another's would be a number the data does not support. Where a car is sold with more than one powertrain, its powertrains page sets them side by side — for the cars at the top of this table: Tata Nexon, Kia Syros, Tata Punch, Hyundai Venue, Kia Sonet and Tata Curvv. And if the more powerful engine comes only with an automatic, what the gearbox itself costs is measured in what an automatic actually costs. For whether a turbo is worth its premium over the plain petrol on the same car, see turbo petrol against petrol; for every car under the line by price rather than power, cars under ₹10 lakh.
